Are white kitchens out? We don’t think so…

We don’t know if you’ve noticed, but in the last few years there has been a big shift away from white kitchens. While we will be the first to say we love kitchen cabinets in warm bold colours, we also don’t think white kitchens will ever go “out” of style. White kitchens can be so classic and beautiful. They can also be cold & lifeless — this is what we are trying to steer away from.

If you know you want a white kitchen, here are some tips we would recommend to warm up and bring life into a white kitchen!

Pick a warm white

There are so many whites! You need a warm white so that your kitchen feels timeless vs. 2010 modern farmhouse or a cold hospital. It can be so hard to choose the right white. Here are some of our favourites.

  • Schoolhouse White (farrow & ball)

  • White Duck (sherwin williams) — this is one of our favourites and you can see it in our #mandfnotincapecod kitchen.

  • Wimborne White (farrow & ball)

  • Swiss Coffee (benjamin moore) — a very warm white

Exposed hinges

Adding exposed hinges is a great way to add detail and character to a white kitchen, they especially pop against white and add in warm tones into the space.

Incorporate wood

We love a wood island in a kitchen. If a wood island is out of reach, then you can incorporate an antique prep table or an antique wood piece somewhere else in the space. Another way you could add in wood tones is a walnut countertop. They look especially great against white cabinets and are very timeless.

Add details to the walls

A good way to add warmth, is adding detail to the walls. A tongue & groove or a tile goes a long way. This adds a whole additional layer that helps white kitchens not feel as stark.

Accessories really matter

Accessories matter so much in a white kitchen. We’d suggest adding lots of warmth and colour with the accessories. We’d do this with vintage rugs, vintage oil paintings, copper pots, antique plates, lamps and dish towels.

Contrasting countertops

We love soapstone in a white kitchen. It provides contrast to white kitchens in a timeless way. You can also have fun with a soapstone backsplash, adding detail that elevates your space. Whittney is so good at this, see an example below:
